The Highest Roller Coasters in UK Theme Parks
Posted on: June 28, 2011
The UK is home to some of the highest coasters in Europe. Here are the top 5:
At 235 feet above sea level (213 feet above the ground), the Pepsi Max Big One at Pleasure Beach Blackpool is the highest roller coast in the UK. This steel coaster was sponsored by Pepsi and cost £12milllion to build, the second largest ever investment for Pleasure Beach. It is more than a mile long, one of the longest in the world. The first drop has an incline angle of 65 steep degrees and the coaster reaches speeds of up to 74 mph.
Stealth is the name of a steel coaster built by Intamin AG of Switzerland and located at Thorpe Park. It opened in 2006 and reaches heights of 206 feet. It is the third tallest in Europe behind the Silver Star (in Germany) and the Pepsi Max Big One at Pleasure Beach Blackpool. Stealth launches riders from 0 to 80 mph in just under 3 seconds. It used to be the fastest coaster in Europe until the Furius Baco opened in 2007 in Spain.
Jubilee Odyssey is a coaster located at Fantasy Island in Ingoldmells, England. It is the largest suspended looping coaster in the world. It was built in 2002 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. It reaches heights of 167 ft, though plans originally called for it to be 265 feet. Plans had to be changed due to complaints from local residents.
Millennium Roller Coaster is also located at Fantasy Island in Ingoldmells. Built by Vekoma, it was opened in May 1999. It was Fantasy Island's first extreme thrill ride. It encircles the park's centre piece, the Pyramid. It has a vertical loop, a corkscrew, and another loop. It ends after a helix, followed by the brake run. Some of the track is intertwined with that of the Jubilee Odyssey, making it feel extra dangerous.
The Shockwave is a stand-up coaster at Drayton Manor Theme Park that opened in 1994. It is the only stand-up coaster in Europe and the only stand-up coaster in the world with a zero-gravity roll. It was opened as part of a £4 million expansion project in 1993-1994. It reaches speeds of 53 mph and pulls 4 g's.
